No HRI seminar scheduled for Friday, July 4
The weekly HRI Seminar, which normally takes place on Fridays at 3:30
pm in HRI Conference Center 127, will not meet this Friday in
observance of Independence Day.

Furgason retires,
McKinney named for post
After directing the HRI during its first two years,
Dr. Robert Furgason
stepped down from his position as HRI's executive director on March 31. He
has been involved with the HRI since its
inception. To honor the institute's director,
Ed Harte recently named a new HRI
endowment the "Furgason Fellowships," which will provide funding
for bringing in researchers from Mexico and Cuba.
Dr. Larry D. McKinney, director of Coastal
Fisheries and senior director
of Aquatic Resources for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, will take Furgason's
place as HRI's new executive director. He will assume his new
duties in
July. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi President Flavius Killebrew made the announcement on April 29, following an
exhaustive international search.

HRI research
associate receives award
In her PhD dissertation, HRI's Postdoctoral Research
Associate
Dr. Ivonne Cruz proposed a new evaluation methodology inspired
by a humanistic development theory better known as the Human-Scale Development approach. For the innovative endeavor and holistic approach that Cruz pursued in addressing the issue of human development, the Universidad Complutense de Madrid
in Spain awarded her first prize and $4,620 (3,000 euro) in the category of social and legal sciences as part of a contest on approaches to international
aid and human development.
